4-2. The Existence of Counterinstances

とはいえ、paradigmも万能ではない。過去の具体的な業績である以上、自然過程の探求における指導原理として役者不足となる時がくるものである。Paradigmに死を宣告する要素は何であろうか。

normal scienceは、paradigmの知ろしめす計画を遂行する物であって其れをテストするような物ではない。したがって、あらかじめparadigmに含まれていないような問題は殆ど触れられないか、あるいは完全に無視される。反証例counter-instanceに対するこのような抵抗があるからこそnormal scienceは信じ難いほど徹底する。

ところが、normal scienceは十分に整備された設備で以って十分な精度の観測を行なう物であるからparadigmの延長では解けないような現象を発見する事がある。また時には、normal scienceの徹底のために、自動律のparadigmは自らの外延であるにもかかわらずそのparadigmでは解けない問題を生み出してしまう。
ほとんどの場合このような問題は、意味のある物だとは気付かれないか、或いは益体の無い問題として無視される。paradigmの危機が、危機として正当に認識されないのである。Crisisへの科学者の対応がどのようなものであるのか論じた箇所を抜粋してみよう。

p.77 ...once it has achieved the status of paradigm, a scientific theory is declared invalid only if an alternate candidate is available to take its place$\ldots$ The decision to reject one paradigm is always simultaneously the decision to accept another, and the judgement leading to that decision involves the comparison of both paradigms with nature and with each other.

p.79 ...once a first paradigm through which to view nature has been found, there is no such thing as research in the absence of any paradigm. To reject one paradigm without simultaneously substituting another is to reject science itself. That act reflects not on the paradigm but on the man.

つまり、normal scienceとcrisis stateにある科学とは最終的に区別し得ないものである。normal scienceを構成するpuzzleは、科学研究の基礎を与えるparadigmがその問題を解決し得ないからこそ存在するものであって、normal scienceがいずれ解き得ると思っているpuzzleは、他の観点からすればcounter-instanceに見え、source of crisisに見えるものである。

p.80 ...even the existence of crisis does not by itself transform a puzzle into a counterinstance. There is no such sharp dividing line. Instead, by proliferating versions of the paradigm, crisis loosens the rules of normal puzzle-solving in ways that ultimately permit a new paradigm to emerge. There are, I think, only two alternatives: either no scientific theory ever confronts counterinstance, or all such theories confront counterinstances at all times.
